Sri Lanka 09 Nights / 10 Days

Day 01  –  Arrival, meet and greet at Colombo international airport by Walkers Tours guide and airport representative, before transferring to Colombo.

Overnight at Colombo.

 

Day 02 – Morning city tour of Colombo including visits to the Residential, Commercial and Bazaar areas – the tour also includes visits to the well known Departmental stores such as “House of Fashion” and “ODEL”, which has internationally recognized “Designer”

brands of clothing at an unbelievable prices. The clients will also be taken to the newly opened floating market in the heart of Colombo.

Arrive at the hotel.

Habarana is the hub of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. The drive will take you through small villages interspersed with paddy fields, coconut and rubber plantations and forest.

Check-in to Chaaya Village/ Cinnamon Lodge , Habarana – this is superbly located in a huge 15 hectare forest now a landscaped garden and borders  very picturesque lake. All rooms are “Chalet style” mini suites, with all modern amenities. Being in the center of the Cultural Triangle it is one of the most convenient places to stay while making short excursions to the highlights of the area.

Evening will be spent at leisure.

Day 03 – Leave early morning with a packed breakfast for Hiriwaduna (05 minute transfer) for a 03 hour trek through this archetypal Sri Lankan village. The trek begins with an awesome walk along a bund of a Wewa or manmade reservoir. The reservoir itself, the surrounding scrub jungle, marshland and village are a hive of early morning activity. The amazing birdlife, butterflies and possible sightings of crocodile only add to the charm of seeing the villagers as they go about their early morning tasks of fishing, or washing clothes at the periphery of the lake.

You wade through a shallow stream and the sense of adventure heightens when you need to get a Chena Cultivation via a somewhat wider tributary which needs to be crossed on an obliging farmer’s catamaran!!

At the Chena cultivation you will stop to enjoy the farmer’s humble hospitality. With the guidance of the farmer and his family, pick some of the fresh vegetables from their plot and join in the preparation of a simple meal prepared in the traditional method using earthenware pots and firewood as fuel. A great opportunity to sample authentic local cuisine.

The journey continues through dense shrub forests, home to many forest birds and other wildlife including monkeys, bear, python and even elephant.

Meet vehicle and return to the hotel

Afternoon leave for Sigiriya on Bikes, where you will ride through local villages and you may even have the opportunity meet a few!

Climb the Rock Fortress of Sigiriya

Sigiriya – A mighty 600 ft high rock-fortress of a 5th century King is famous for its entrancingly beautiful frescoes which are found in a sheltered pocket of the rock.  One cannot fail to marvel at the masterful execution of the sinuous forms of these women (originally 500, of which only 19 remain today).  The old stairway to the top led through the mouth of a huge crouching lion, carved from the rock- today only the paws remain.  Remains of the handsome royal citadel are on the summit.

Day 04 – Take an early morning Elephant Back Safari through the plains of Habarana                

Leave for Kandy

Evening city tour of Kandy including a visit to the Temple of the Tooth

Kandy a lovely city, the Hill Capital and last stronghold of the Sinhala Kings retains an aura of grandeur, which time has not affected. Encircled by hills, with a tranquil lake in its center, it is the site of the renowned “Temple of the Tooth” and the Royal Botanical gardens home to one of the best collections of Orchids. Kandy and its satellite villages are the centre of the islands handicraft industry and its traditional dances are the most spectacular in the country.

Day 05 – Visit the Royal Botanical Garden after breakfast.

The Botanical Gardens is 147 acres in extent, stated in 1374 as a pleasure garden of the Kings of Kandy. There are more than 5000 species of tree and plants as well as some rare and endemic flora from the tropical world. Spice Garden and Orchid House are popular with tourists. This is haven not only fir Scientists but to every nature lover as well.

Thereafter leave to Nuwara Eliya visiting a tea plantation to see how tea is plucked and a factory to witness the processing of the raw green leaf to the final graded product. (Approximate travel time 2  hours to Nuwara Eliya)

Nuwara Eliya – Sri Lanka’s premier hill resort with a fine bracing mountain climate, Nuwara Eliya is also the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country, producing some of the world’s best tea.  The mountain slopes and valleys are a carpet of velvety green tea plantations, interspersed with gushing streams and tumbling waterfalls. Red or green roofed plantation bungalows, English country style homes and hotels with lovely flower gardens, a fine 18 hole golf course and a racecourse gives Nuwara Eliya a decidedly British character.

Day 06 – Leave for Yala after breakfast.  (Approximate travel time is 4 hours to Yala)

Evening: At leisure to explore the surroundings or for an optional nature walk

Day 07 – Leave early morning for a jeep safari of the Yala National Park.

Yala – Situated 309 kms south of Colombo, Yala is approximately 1259 kms in extent and is located in the southeastern corner of the Island. It is popular for Elephant, Leopard, Bear, Crocodile and Wild Boar. 97,800 hectares in extent, this is the second largest of Sri Lanka’s National Parks. Its open undulating terrain made it famous for elephants for many years, but recently the park has also received much fame through publicity by National Geographic and the Discovery TV channels, which focused on a leopard research/conservation and identification project. Claims have subsequently been made that Yala National Park has the world’s highest concentration of leopard per square kilometre. Vegetation is primarily grassland and shrub jungle with patches of dense growth while several salt and fresh water lagoons are a haven for a large variety of resident and migrant birds. Areas popular with leopard are rock strewn hillocks with dense shrub in which the animals hide.

Day 08 – Proceed to Bentota / Beruwela after breakfast via Galle visiting the Dutch Fort and Museum, stilt fisherman in Weligama, the mask manufacturers in Ambalangoda and a turtle hatchery in Kosgoda.  (Approximate travel time is 4 – 5 hours to Bentota / Beruwela)

Day 10 –Transfer to the Bandaranaike International Airport in time to meet departure flight.
